Freycinet Trail
The Freycinet Trail extends twelve kilometres along the coastline of Fitzgerald Bay in the Upper Spencer Gulf. The trail begins at the northern end of Fitzgerald Bay, following the coast line to the southern tip of the bay at Point Lowly.
The trail consisting of hiking, cycling and driving components, is sign posted with trail markers along with interpretive signage detailing the significance of the coast line.
The interpretive signage explains the natural history, indigenous heritage, early maritime exploration and industrial developments of this rugged and unique coastline.
The Fitzgerald Bay hiking trail is four kilometres long and offers a leisurely walk along the dunes, pebble beaches and through the bushland. This beginning of the trail is a hiking only section, and although there are access roads to the beginning of the trail, the trail itself winds through sensitive coastal areas. These trails are clearly defined through strategically placed markers and it is expected that hikers stay on these trails.
There is parking available at the beginning of the trail, along with a camping area and toilet facilities. Other car parking facilities are available at sectors seven and eight.
The hiking only component of the trail consists of seven sub sections, winding through the vegetation and sand dunes highlighting the following characteristics:
· Two Hills, creek and army land.
· Life between the tides.
· Local flora and fauna.
· Local geology.
· Mangroves.
· Rebecca plateau.
· Freycinet trail route map.
The remainder of the trail is suitable for hiking, cycling or driving. It follows the coastal emergency route, providing spectacular views of the ocean. This section of the trail consists of nine sectors, and comparisons can be made with this coast line and that of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Panoramic views and a rugged coastline are highlights of the second phase of the trail. The highlights of this section include:
· Aquaculture.
· Local marine life.
· Aboriginal heritage.
· Local fishing industry.
· Cuttlefish.
· Local Hydrology.
· Lighthouse and cottages (Freycinet Trail route map).
· Santos and international shipping.
· Flinders and Freycinet and Point Lowly.
