Hugh Hamilton Wines
Hugh Hamilton's cellar door is one of the most stunning in the region. It should be the first stop of any trip to McLaren Vale.
An inspired glass rotunda set on a ridge, it is the only place where you get a near 360-degree vista of the region, with views of the stunning rolling hills to the south, the Mt Lofty ranges to the east and the coast to the west.
Inside you will find Australian winemaking history. The interior is panelled with rich red Jarrah that Hugh dismantled from the biggest timber vat ever built in the Southern hemisphere, from the old family winery, Hamiltons Ewell.
Hugh is the fifth generation of the Hamilton family who planted the first vines in South Australia in 1837. All families have balck sheep and Hugh is it. You can expect therefore to enjoy the difference. The black sheep if master of a most reprobate flock with wines such as 'The Trickster' verdelho, 'The Rascal' shiraz and 'The Madam' sparkling Merlot – this is no ordinary flock.
The wines are not ordinary either. Hugh has clear vision about the way he sees wines and he produces accordingly. He is a firm believer in the wine and food experience. Neither is magic. Both are great, especially in the company of good friends and lively conversation. His wines are eminently drinkable and certainly very more-ish; that means you'll always come back for the next glass!
Hugh grows 10 varieties including some you have never heard of. They come from small parcels off his three vineyards in McLaren Vale, including the famous Church block. Having his own vineyards means Hugh has the luxury of growing for flavour rather than yield, which results in delicious wines jam-packed with flavour.
Apart from award winning wines, Hugh's cellar door specializes in regional produce offering a range of locally made gourmet goods, many of which can be tasted while you are there.
The first Sunday of each month from April to November is Hugh's Oister Day where he shucks huge west coast oysters, which are served along with a variety of other dishes for non-oyster eaters.
