The Steam Exchange Brewery
Goolwa is Australia's first officially credited 'Cittaslow' (slow-food/lifestyle) town. Located in the centre of the historic Goolwa Wharf Precinct, the Steam Exchange Brewery revives the grand tradition of brewing fine ales as a part of the Fleurieu Peninsula regional cuisine.
The concept behind the Steam Exchange is rooted in an age when most country towns could boast their own brewery - indeed in the 1880's, Goolwa had two! Sadly this is no longer the case, but the Steam Exchange is a revival of the traditional family-run local breweries of old, with all ales brewed according to the German Purity Law of 1516. This law proclaimed that beer must contain only the essential ingredients: malted barley, hops, yeast and water.
Our distinctive beers are available to sale directly from our brewery or from a few selected outlets in South Australia. The brewery is open for tasting and sales seven days a week from 10am to 5pm.
Our ales' distinctive flavours are best enjoyed fresh. Steam Exchange beers are unique, one of very few to reach the consumer after being sterile filtered, rather than pasteurised. This preservative-free approach maintains the crisp and bold flavours within the beer. A variety of beers are produced, consisting of four permanent beers and a range of seasonals available on a rotational basis.
