Tallaringa Conservation Park
Tallaringa Conservation Park (1,246,000 hectares), located 100 kilometres due west of Coober Pedy South Australia, lies on the fringe of the Great Victoria Desert and is a vast wilderness of vegetated dunes and gibber rises.
The park supports a variety of important species that have adapted to live in the dry arid area. Of particular interest is the Mulga woodland, found to be different from others already conserved because of the absence of Porcupine Grass (Triodia) from the understorey. This was a major consideration when this area was recommended for conservation.
Tallaringa Conservation Park is part of an area traditionally occupied by the closely related Antakerinya, Yankuntjara and Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal groups. The park holds great cultural significance for Aboriginal people and the Tjarliri Association primarily represents their interests today.
Access to Tallaringa is via a Public Access Route through Mabel Creek Station (please leave gates as you find them, open or closed). The Anne Beadell Highway (a rough sandy track suitable for four wheel drive vehicles only) commences on the eastern boundary of Tallaringa and runs due west for approximately 1200 kilometres to Laverton, Western Australia. This is a remote and uninhabited area and travellers need to be well informed and prepared. Ample reserves of fuel, water and food must be carried, as there are no services between Coober Pedy and Laverton.
Permits are required to travel though the Woomera Prohibited Area, Maralinga Tjarutja Land, Unnamed Conservation Park and Tallaringa Conservation Park.
Camping in Tallaringa is permitted in clear areas within 100 metres of the Anne Beadell Highway.
