Sunsets, Saddles & Shiraz

Ever dreamed of the droving life - just you and your trusty steed, the red desert below and endless blue skies overhead?

‘Sunsets, Saddles & Shiraz’ is a new, authentic Australian Outback experience, combining the rustic romance of cattle droving, gourmet food and wine, native wildlife and the breath-taking Flinders Ranges. And it’s all just a few hours’ drive north of Adelaide, the cultural capital of South Australia.

Two days you’ll never forget. Expert drovers will match you to your mount, and before long you’ll be ambling along on horseback – hearing about life as a drover, feeling the sun on your back, seeing magnificent desert landscapes and smelling the desert at dusk.

You’ll learn to identify various animal tracks and native plants. And you’ll tail the cattle until late in the afternoon, with the sinking sun guiding you in to camp for the night.

We’ll do our utmost to introduce you to the ‘locals’. During your Outback adventure, we’ll take you in search of the rare (and incredibly cute) Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby. This elusive little fella can be found in Brachina Gorge, a haven for many native animals. Rock fragments in Brachina date back 500 to 600 million years, so there’s a fair bit of history to share.

Rest assured, you won’t go hungry. You’ll dine under a canopy of stars, with a menu inspired by renowned Australian chef Andrew Fielke. From hearty, full-cooked breakfasts to fresh, scrumptious lunches and gourmet dinners. The beer will be cold, the Aussie wine will be divine and the coffee will be strong.

‘Sunsets, Saddles & Shiraz’ is a three night experience, allowing plenty of time for you to become an old hand on the horse. You’ll be immersed in your Outback adventure, tailing the cattle deep in to the bush and over a multitude of desert landscapes. You’ll also get maximum time with the droving team, learning about their lives and the history of the Australian bush.So get cracking.

We look forward to saying G’day.

Day One: Arrive at the Prairie Hotel at approximately 3pm - Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby Tour. We'll take you in search of the rare (and incredibly cute) Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby. This elusive little fella can be found in Brachina Gorge, one of the Flinders Ranges National Park's most spectacular attractions and a haven for many native species. Rock fragments in Brachina date back 500 to 600 million years, so there's a fair bit of history to share. Return to the Prairie Hotel to experience the hospitality and cuisine that the Prairie is world renowned for. Tonight you'll dine under the canopy of an outback sky with a menu prepared by Andrew Fielke. Local singer/songwriter John O'Dea will entertain with his Australian Heritage Music. Tonight you'll enjoy the award winning luxury of the Prairie Hotel. Day Two: Wake to see a sunrise over the Flinders Ranges that fills you with awe. Enjoy a hearty Prairie breakfast before departing for Nilpena Station. Expert drovers will match you to your mount, and before long you'll be ambling along on horseback - hearing about life as a drover, feeling the sun on your back, seeing magnificent desert landscapes (from gibber plains to sandy creek beds lined with majestic river red gums), and smelling the desert at dusk. Around midday we'll break for lunch as the cattle are spelled. Enjoy a fresh packed lunch and billy tea in a shady creek bed. Hear more stories from local characters and take the time to stretch out or explore your surroundings for some awesome photographic opportunities. After lunch continue your ride where you'll learn to identify various animal tracks and native plants. And you'll tail the cattle until late in the afternoon, with the sinking sun guiding you in to the camp for the night. Rest assured, you won't go hungry after the day in the saddle. You'll enjoy a gourmet dinner with premium beers and award winning South Australian wines. When it's time to say goodnight, you'll roll out your swag and be lulled to sleep with the view of an amazing Outback night sky. Day Three: Continue on your ultimate Outback Adventure. You'll travel across the amazing desert landscapes of Nilpena Station: it's right on the edge of red sand dunes which sweep far away to the north; and to the east you'll get panoramic views of the Flinders Ranges.
