The Islander Estate Vineyards Pty Ltd
The Islander Estate is located in the heart of Kangaroo Island north of Parndana on the gentle slopes of Kohinoor Hills. Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia and sits 75 miles in front of the Adelaide coast.
The idea of making wine on Kangaroo Island occurred to Jacques Lurton in 1997, when he visited the island on his honeymoon with his wife Frascoise. They fell in love with its natural beauty, saw few planted wines but recognised its considerable potential.
The close spacing of 5000 vines per hectare, initiated by Jacques, is a quality factor to control yield per wine and achieve more flavour and phenolic concentration.
Jacques considers that to make a great wine it is necessary to blend either the same varieties from different regions or different varieties from the same region. He has chosen Kangaroo Island as the region with a multi varietal blend.
A modern 70 tonne winery respecting the classic Australian style has been erected on site. The equipment has mainly been brought from France with sorting tables to select the best of the grapes after destemming concrete open fermenters with temperature control for fermentation and large wooden vats for ageing.
Kangaroo Island offers near perfect growing conditions, including a cool, semi dry climate that allows slow ripening, significant factors in producing The Islander Estate Wines.
