Seal Bay Conservation Park
There are just a handful of places in Australia where you can watch Australian sea lions on a beautiful stretch of sandy beach - Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island is one of them.
At Seal Bay Conservation Park, you can join one of the regular guided tours and see Australian Sea-lions up-close in their natural environment of coastal vegetation, dunes and beach.
Watch in delight as these fascinating creatures nurture their young, jostle, play and rest on the beach after an exhausting few days feeding at sea - a little like watching a wildlife documentary unfold before your eyes.
Visitors to Seal Bay can wander along the 400-metre boardwalk to viewing platform, which meanders through the sand dunes, (be on the look out for the skeleton of a Humpback whale often visible from the walkway). The viewing platform and lookouts at the end of the boardwalk provide great opportunities to linger, observe the sea-lions surfing the waves, and enjoy the stunning coastal landscape.
In the 1800s, Australian Sea lions were hunted for their skins and blubber. Most of the colonies along the coastline of Kangaroo Island were almost hunted to extinction. Conservation laws now protect Seal Bay, and offers you a memorable encounter observing these rare animals.
Entry tickets can be purchased from Seal Bay Visitor Information Centre, where you can also browse for souvenirs and learn more about these fascinating creatures. Special pre-sunset tours are also available in summer school holidays.
Seal Bay is a 45-minute drive from Kangaroo Island's main town of Kingscote. Access to the sea-lion colony and beach is by guided tour only.
