Zema Estate
Nestled amongst the corporate giants of the Australian wine industry along Riddoch Highway in Coonawarra, is Zema Estate – a unique family owned and operated winery and vineyard.
The Estate, which originated as a “dream” for Demetrio Zema, is now one of the finest vineyards in Coonawarra and produces some of Australia’s greatest red wines.
The dream became a reality in 1982 when Demetrio and Francesca, who with their two sons Matt and Nick, purchased a small block in the very heart of
Coonawarra – Australia’s most famous red wine region. The property already had eight acres of mature Shiraz vines and the Zema family planted the
remaining twelve acres to Cabernet Sauvignon marking the beginning of Demetrio’s thirty year ambition.
Much has changed since the first vintage in 1982, which was made in an old shed and milk tanker on the vineyard. Today the Zema winery is modern and
efficient with the equipment and capacity required for quality wine production.
The vineyard holdings have also been increased from the original twenty acre block to a total of 150 acres with planting’s of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the introduction of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec.
The Zema family remains adamantly traditional about their vineyard and viticulture practices; in favour of dry land viticulture and hand pruning – methods
which produce intense, rich fruit of the highest quality.
All aspects of their quality red wine production, from hand pruning and winemaking, right through to bottling and packaging are overseen by the family on the estate. The wine only leaves the property when sold; either through their own Cellar Door Sales outlet or through their national and international network of select wine distributors.
Zema Estate’s modern new Cellar Door facility is open for sales and tastings every day from 9am to 5pm and visitors are assured a warm and friendly
welcome – that special brand of hospitality, which only comes from a small, family owned business.
