Naracoorte Caves National Park
Not only will the beauty of Naracoorte Caves leave you speechless, but their rich fossil history is enough to earn them a well-deserved spot on the World Heritage List – South Australia’s only listed attraction.
For more than 500,000 years giant animals roamed the Naracoorte area. Falling into well hidden pitfall caves, their fossilised skeletons have been left behind, giving scientists a rare glimpse of animal life long extinct.
Giant marsupials such as the wombat-like Diprotodon, Thylacoleo the marsupial lion and a host of kangaroos lived in the area and these animals, along with others, have been recreated into life-sized models at the renowned Wonambi Fossil Centre.
The park’s 26 caves boast a glorious display of stalagmites and stalactites.
One cave is home to the threatened Southern Bent-winged Bat that returns each spring to give birth and raise young. Thanks to infrared technology, you can observe this annual event along with the nightly exit of thousands of bats – a truly spectacular sight!
A variety of tours are on offer, showcasing amazing fossil and limestone formations through to adventure caving, where you can crawl, slide and squeeze through tight tunnels and chambers.
Camping and picnic grounds and a licensed café are also available at the World Heritage Site, just 10 kilometres outside of Naracoorte.
