Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park
Located midway between Adelaide and Melbourne, just 21 kilometres from Naracoorte, Bool Lagoon Game Reserve is one of the largest and most diverse freshwater systems in Southern Australia.
Teeming with birds, insects and small reptiles, this 3,010 hectare wetland is an important refuge for wildlife during drought.
Visit Bool Lagoon in the frenzy of spring to see birds such as Black Swans, Magpie Geese, Ibis and elegant Brolgas foraging for food in the water and amongst the reeds. In summer, international guests such as migratory waders like Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, Greenshanks and massive flocks of ducks make their annual migration from the Northern Hemisphere to the lagoon - a distance of more than 20,0000 kilometres.
Specially developed boardwalks and bird hides help you discover the magic of this amazing wetland.
The Gahnia Boardwalk is a highlight for many visitors. Stretching 500 metres across the open lagoon, it almost feels as if you're walking on water. While the short drive to Big Hill, offers spectacular panoramic views that help you appreciate just how vast these wetlands really are. Or better still, camp overnight and awake to the lyrical chorus of birds and frogs, that greet every dusk and dawn.
Keep your ears open for the Marsh Frog or Growling Grass Frog - which really does growl. Basic camping facilities and pleasant picnic spots can be found near the shores of Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park.
Don't forget to take your binoculars, comfy walking shoes and bird identification book, for an even more rewarding experience. Please note the reserve is also a conservation area and habitat for snakes, which are also protected.
