Mount Muirhead Lookout
The Mount Muirhead Lookout is a great place to view the surrounding Millicent flats, the Mount Burr Range and Forestry South Australia pine plantations. You can see across the rich black soil flats to the township of Millicent and further on the horizon to the Limestone Coast and Canunda National Park.
The viewing platform is six metres by six metres in size and was constructed by the unemployed youth through the Millicent Employment Training Centre. There are forestry interpretive signs and information at the lookout and a large car park.
Mount Muirhead is the South Australian starting point for the Volcanoes Discovery Trail. It is a maar and scoria cone and was once part of the coastline. Mount Muirhead has an asymmetrical shape due to onshore winds and wave erosion caused by high winds during periods of volcanic activity.
The lookout is situated on the Mount Burr, Penola Road approximately six kilometres from Millicent on the right hand side as you drive over the Mount Burr Range.
Brochures for the Volcanoes Discovery Trail and Forestry South Australia can be obtained from the Millicent Visitor Information Centre at 1 Mount Gambier Road, Millicent.
