Danggali Conservation Park
If you enjoy the seclusion and adventure of far away places, Danggali Conservation Park, 90 kilometres north of Renmark is sure to appeal.
Enlisted in 1977 as Australia's very first Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO's 'Man and the Biosphere Program', Danggali's immense mallee woodlands and bluebush scrublands represent a unique cross-over of arid land and mallee ecosystems.
The park is a sanctuary for wildlife such as Red and Western Grey kangaroos, emus, bats and a huge diversity of birds. Make sure you take your binoculars for a chance to see Yellow-Plumed honeyeaters, Blue Bonnets and rare Scarlet-chested rosellas flying among the grey-green mallee trees. A small waterhole along the Target Mark Walking Trail offers a great spot to see wildlife gather to drink at dusk.
Danggali also shares a rich cultural heritage. The 90 kilometre Nanya’s Pad Interpretation Trail lets you discover special sites of the local Aboriginal Dhanggagali people who have lived in the region for thousand of years. Although this scenic loop is fine for two wheel drive vehicles, to really explore the park, a four wheel drive is recommended.
Several pleasant camping spots among the Mallee and Black Oak let you enjoy the serenity of Danggali’s peaceful wilderness setting.
If camping isn't your style, the renovated Danggali Shearer’s Quarters, once part of a pastoral Sheep Station, offers comfortable bunk beds with shared cooking and bathroom facilities. Call the Berri Department for Environment and Heritage office for details.
Because of the parks remoteness and lack of accessible water, food or fuel, visitors need to be well prepared and carry adequate supplies. To make yours a safe and enjoyable journey, give the Berri Department for Environment and Heritage office a call for more information before you leave.
