The Wren's Nest self-contained cottage in Maydena is near Mount Field National Park, northwest of Hobart. It’s an ideal base to explore Tasmania’s World Heritage listed south-west, the Styx Forest and Mount Field National Park to see the world's tallest hardwood trees - eucalyptus regnan.
The spacious Wren's Nest cottage is fully self-contained and offers modern facilities including a microwave and VCR. It's a perfect home-away-from-home stay for the family, or a quiet retreat for two.
Continental breakfast provisions are provided, and the Giant's Table cafe is just across the road, so you can enjoy a bottle of wine and a sumptuous meal in the restaurant.
Maydena sits on the banks of the Tyenna River, and you can fish in the trout-filled River, or enjoy the leisurely walk to Junee Cave. Mount Field National Park has an interpretation centre, Russell and Horseshoe waterfalls, and lots of well marked walks around Lakes Fenton and Dobson and onto the Tarn Shelf. The Styx Valley is a 30 minute drive away and you can explore the Forestry Tasmania run Big Tree Reserve. Enormous treeferns and rainforest species line the road and giant eucalyptus regnans tower overhead. Or you can pack a picnic and take a scenic drive to Lake Pedder and the Gordon Dam, approximately 60 minutes' drive. On the way, look out for a guided walk called, The Creepy Crawly Nature Trail.
