Yarns (Artwork In Silk)
Yarns Artwork in Silk is a display of silk art at Deloraine, northern Tasmania.
Yarns Artwork in Silk depicts the landscape and four seasons of northern Tasmania’s Great Western Tiers mountain range. The large-scale work has been created in four panels, each measuring three-and-a-half metres by four metres. This work, crafted by more than 300 local artists, took 10,000 hours and 200 metres of hand-dyed silk to complete. The artists have employed a number of techniques including embroidery, cross stitch, weaving, patchwork and quilting to create Yarns. Yarns Artwork in Silk tells the story of the local area – exploring its history, landscape and culture. The display includes an audiovisual presentation which expands on the work.
Deloraine and the surrounding district is one of Tasmania’s most significant regional centres for art and crafts. Every year the town hosts the Tasmanian Craft Fair - Australia’s largest working craft fair - which attracts over 200 local and interstate exhibitors and 30,000 visitors annually.
Deloraine is approximately 40-minutes’ drive (53 kilometres/33 miles) west from Launceston.
