Lake Cethana

Lake Cethana is a Hydro Tasmania lake near Moina in north west Tasmania. Moina is an hour’s drive south west of Devonport (55 kilometres/34 miles) and two hours west of Launceston (124 kilometres/78 miles).
Created as part of the Mersey-Forth hydro-electric scheme, Lake Cethana’s deep waters have been stocked with plump trout. You can launch your boat here and spend the day fishing, or enjoy a picnic or barbecue on the shore. Once a mining town, Moina now offers a choice of luxury eco-lodge accommodation, surrounded by mountains, tall eucalpyt forests, fern glades and pockets of rainforest. From here, you can explore other local attractions including Mole Creek Karst National Park, where you can take a guided tour of Marakoopa and King Solomons caves to see stunning limestone formations, or drive south west to Cradle Mountain national park to experience Tasmanian’s Wilderness World Heritage Area.
You will need a license to fish for trout in Tasmania’s lakes. A free brochure - ‘Fishing Code for Anglers’ is available from licence selling agents and the Inland Fisheries Commission.
