Penitentiary Accommodation Units are at Darlington, Maria Island, off the east cost of Tasmania.
Penitentiary Accommodation Units provide simple hostel accommodation in the original convict penitentiary (circa 1825) on Maria Island. There are nine rooms each with six bunk beds with vinyl covered mattresses, table and wood fired heater.
Toilet and washing up facilities are nearby. Gas operated hot showers are available in the amenities block near the barbecue area. A gold coin donation is required.
Free electric barbecues are located behind sand dunes in Darlington Bay.
Bookings are essential and National Park Fees apply.
Maria Island is a special place with something for everyone - historic ruins, intriguing history, sweeping bays, rugged cliffs, mountains, and abundant wildlife. Located off the warm east coast of Tasmania, the island is easily accessed by passenger ferry. Once on the island you will discover a place where there is no traffic, no shops and no worries.
Wildlife roam freely over the island, including a number of threatened species and the marine reserve has excellent scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities. Sighting of sea eagles, dolphins, whales and seals is also common from the island.
