Inverawe Native Gardens
Inverawe Native Gardens is situated a 15 minute drive from Hobart, Tasmania’s capital.
Experience this unique garden with its enormous collection of Australian native plants, spread over almost ten hectares that sweep down to the shoreline. You will be overwhelmed by the colour, texture and subtle scents of this great garden.
Take tea on the terrace or just sit on one of the many seats, soak up the atmosphere of peace and serenity, watch some of Inverawe’s 83 bird species bustle about. Bring a note book and list plant species you want for your own garden – plants are identified by name. Borrow some of our landscaping ideas. Explore the context of Inverawe by browsing the interpretive signs. Stroll across the grasslands, through 30 odd species of Eucalypt and have a chat to Dave. Dave’s a tree but he’s a good listener. So is Ursula.
Over 5000 native plants have gone into this six year old garden, supplementing natural regeneration. Several hundred metres of paths and tonnes of rock walling have transformed a weed infested, garbage strewn wasteland into Tasmania’s largest, open to the public, landscaped Australian native garden. Plants are chosen for minimum water requirements, minimum maintenance and minimum use of chemicals.
