Forest and Heritage Centre
The Forest and Heritage Centre is a forestry interpretation centre at Geeveston in southern Tasmania. Geeveston is 50 minutes south of Hobart (71 kilometres/44 miles) in the Huon Valley.
The Centre is comprised of four sections. The Forest Room presents displays of Tasmanian forest types, wildlife and past and present forest practices. Here, you can see how pioneer timber-getters lived and worked in the bush, learn about current forest management in Tasmania, and see demonstrations of woodturning in the mini-theatre. The Hartz Gallery features an exhibition of original paintings by John Lendis, which illustrate the story ‘Postcards From the Town That Disappeared’ by Cilia Lendis. The gallery also has a collection of antique wood working machinery, crafts and fine furniture by Tasmanian artists. You can browse in the Craft Shop for Tasmanian-made, native timber products, and there is also a Visitor Information Centre. You can also enjoy a number of accessible themed walks through the working forests surrounding the Centre.
The Tahune AirWalk and World Heritage-listed Hartz Mountains National Park are a short drive west of the Centre. The Forest and Heritage Centre was the winner of the 2004 Tasmanian Tourism Awards, General Tourism Services and 2005 General Tourism Award.
