Southern Design Centre
The Southern Design Centre is a furniture and craft centre at Geeveston in southern Tasmania. Geeveston is located in the Huon Valley, an hour’s drive southwest of Hobart (71 kilometres), and fifteen minutes from Huonville (14 kilometres).
The Southern Design Centre specialises in designing and making fine timber furniture. Native Tasmanian timbers, including Huon pine, blackheart sassafras, myrtle, blackwood, celery top pine and Tasmanian oak, are used to create hand crafted furniture. You can see examples of Tasmanian timber furniture in the Centre's showroom, and pieces can also be made to order.
The work of local artists and crafts people is also displayed at the Southern Design Centre in an annual program of exhibitions. A range of decorative and functional pieces is on display, in addition to locally grown and made Tasmanian produce.
You can also observe artisans at work in the Centre's studios. The ‘Allsorts’ are a group of local artists, resident at the Centre. You can see the work of a wood turner, potter, textile artist, silversmith, glass artist and batik artist, and even participate in one of the Centre’s regular art and craft workshops.
