Mt Barrow State Reserve
Mt Barrow State Reserve provides a self-drive discovery trail in Tasmania’s north-east region. The experience takes you on a 24 kilometre (15 mile) return loop to the mountain with various points where you can enjoy lookouts and forest walks.
Mt Barrow is one of the tallest mountains of the north-eastern highlands at 1413 metres, (4636 feet) offering magnificent views, rainforest and alpine vegetation. The discovery trail covers the rich tradition of timber harvesting and sawmilling dating back to the 1830s in the Mt Barrow state forests. Red directional arrows lead you up the mountain. Stop at lookouts, cultural sites and walk beneath the forest canopy. Immerse yourself in the natural surrounds as you learn about the history of the timber industry in Tasmania. Six sawmills once operated on Mt Barrow, with six families living and working in the region. Walk by restored workman’s huts and old tramways. You may see log trucks along your route as Mt Barrow is a working forest and also supports recreational activities and flora and fauna conservation. At the Visitor Centre, enjoy a barbecue or picnic for lunch.
Mt Barrow is about 45-minutes' drive (46 kilometres/28 miles) north-east of Launceston.
