Tall Timbers Adventure Tours

Tall Timbers Adventures offers a range of tours in Tasmania’s far north-west. The tours operate from the Tall Timbers Hotel at Smithton, an hour’s drive west of Burnie (86 kilometres/53 miles) and 15 minutes south-west of Stanley (12 kilometres/seven miles).
The tours include full and half-day Tarkine Wilderness Experiences. Travelling in Tall Timbers’ OKA 14-seat four wheel drive vehicle, you’ll visit the Tarkine wilderness—Australia’s largest area of cool temperate rainforest. You can discover Tasmania’s early pioneer life at Highfield House, the historic Van Dieman’s Land Company homestead, and see how the purest air in the world is harnessed at the Woolnorth Wind Farm. You can also watch Little Penguins return to their burrows at dusk on an Evening Penguin Tour, take a cruise of the Arthur River or see stunning coastal scenery from the air on an Edge of the World and Tarkine Wilderness Helicopter Experience.
All tours depart from Tall Timbers Hotel and departures are subject to passenger numbers.

Edge of the World and Tarkine Wilderness Helicopter Experience Tour

Experience the remote north-west of Tasmania from the air on a Tarkine Wilderness Helicopter Tour. You'll take in the spectacular coastline, the Tarkine rainforest – southern hemisphere's largest cool climate rainforest – and view the Woolnorth wind farm.

Evening Penguin Tour

On Tall Timbers Adventures' Evening Penguin Tour, you can watch a colony of Little Penguins (also known as Fairy Penguins) return to their burrows after a day's hunting in the open ocean. Departing from Tall Timbers Hotel at Smithton, the tour takes you to the foreshore at Stanley, beneath the Nut - the imposing remains of an extinct volcano rising 152 metres from the sea. Your knowledgeable guides will introduce you to these engaging little birds which, at around 30 centimetres high and weighing just one kilo (.220 pounds), are the world's smallest penguins. Little Penguins, whose species name Eudyptula minor means good little diver, have been known to dive down to 57 metres (187 feet) in search of food. This is a great tour for children who will have the rare opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat at close range. The Evening Penguin Tour requires a minimum of four guests and operates on demand from September to March, departing daily at 8pm and returning at 10pm.

Full Day Wilderness Tour

The tour operates, with a minimum of two passengers, every Wednesday departing at 9.00am and returning at 6.00pm. You'll explore remote north-west Tasmania, visiting Dismal Swamp wilderness experience, the Tarkine cool climate rainforest, as well as the dairy farming regions near Marrawah. Morning tea is served en-route and a gourmet lunch is also provided and enjoyed in the forest.
