The journey begins with an early morning ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway in a converted four-wheel-drive Hi-Rail vehicle, which has retractable railway wheels and a glass roof for wonderful views of the rainforest and steep-sided river gorges. With a maximum of eight passengers and a knowledgeable guide, guests enjoy a very special and exclusive journey. After a stop for breakfast at one of the railway sidings along the route, the rail wheels retract and the Hi-Rail drives on the spectacular Mt Jukes Road to the Bird River, where an easy and scenic riverside walking track follows the formation of another heritage railway down to the ghost-port of East Pillinger, on the serene shores of Macquarie Harbour. Here, a gourmet banquet is spread out in the rainforest, with fresh local salmon, quail and fine Tasmanian wines. After lunch, there's time for a stroll to explore the ruins of the deserted port. To end a memorable day, guests return to Strahan in late afternoon aboard the new luxury cruiser Second Nature.
