West Coast Wilderness Railway

The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a steam train journey through mountainous Tasmanian wilderness. Tours depart daily from Queenstown and Strahan.
The West Coast Wilderness Railway is a restoration of the original Mt Lyell Mine railway that operated here in the late 19th century. Your 35-kilometre (22-mile) journey follows the route once travelled by trains carrying copper from rich Queenstown mines to the port at Strahan. Travelling aboard original steam locomotives and coaches, you’ll cross high trestle bridges over river gorges thick with rainforest and stop at restored original stations along the line. Knowledgeable local guides will reveal the railway’s rich heritage throughout your journey.
The faithfully reconstructed line features a unique Abt rack-and-pinion section on the 1:16 inclines and steep grades and is a testimony to the skill of pioneers who hand carved this railway from the wilderness over 100 years ago.
You can enjoy delicious refreshments aboard the train or at the station coffee shop in Queenstown. In the Premier Carriage, indulge in fine cool-climate wines, fresh local pastries and Tasmanian cheeses accompanied by excellent cabin service.
West Coast Wilderness Railway is an Australian Tourism Award winner.
