Cascades Colonial Accommodation, cosy self-contained cottages, a short walk from the beach, overlooking Norfolk Bay.
Cascades was built in 1841 as a probation station, part of the Port Arthur Prison, where prisoners were provisionally released. It housed up to 400 convicts, and today the former Officer Quarters have been restored into self-contained cottages with fully-equipped kitchenettes and open fireplaces.
The former convict workshop is perfect for a romantic getaway with double spa, two bathrooms, central heating and full size kitchen. The two bedroom Officers Quarters is ideal for a family or two couples travelling together.
The property is owned and run by the Clark family, since 1915. You have access to the private family museum and you are encouraged to explore the ruins of the convict cells and mess hall. There are two intriguing bushwalks on the property: one follows the waterfront to the site of the convict jetty; the second follows a convict trail into the rainforest to ruins of the convict saw mill and quarry site.
Cascades is a good central place to stay on the Tasman Peninsula to explore attractions such as Port Arthur Historic Site, Saltwater River Coal Mines, Tasmanian Devil Park and Tasman National Park.
