Ballarat Fine Art Gallery
The Ballarat Fine Art Gallery was established in 1884 and was the first provincial art gallery established in Australia. The gallery possesses the largest and most comprehensive collection of Australian art of all regional galleries.
The collection of Colonial and Heidelberg School paintings is particularly well known and includes work by Eugene von Geurard, Nicholas Chevalier, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin and David Davies. The gallery has a superb collection of Australian prints and drawings, dating from Captain Cook's voyages to the present day.
The gallery also houses the Lindsay Family sitting room and a large number or works by the five Lindsay artists.
The non-Australian part of the collection includes a rare group of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts, Oriental Rugs, decorative arts from the 18th and 19th centuries and some English and European paintings.
Since 1895 the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery has been home to the Eureka Flag. The flag is one of Australia's most important historical relics and is displayed in its own gallery alongside a changing display of goldfields related artwork.
