Rutherglen region
The Rutherglen wine region is home to many historic and innovative wineries - and with 19 cellar doors in close proximity, it's a great area to spend a few days. Rutherglen was established in the 1850s by German winemakers from the Barossa Valley, and many of those first vineyards are still in operation today, producing their famous tokays, muscats and ports as well as full-bodied reds. Many of the wineries have restaurants, offering everything from formal dinners to simple platters of local produce to be enjoyed overlooking the vines. View the winemakers at work and explore the cellars at Campbells Wines, one of the biggest family-owned wineries in the region. All Saints Winery is housed in an 1880s castle and features magnificent gardens, an a la carte restaurant and on-site cooper. Regional events include the Tastes of Rutherglen in March and the Rutherglen Winery Walkabout in June.
