Graham and Jenny Ellender named their 40 acre property Leura Glen after the Blue Mountains town, Leura, where they fell in love. Leura is an Australian Aboriginal or Koori word for lava, and echoes the natural character of the volcanic region of the Macedon Ranges.
Graham escaped from academia at the School of Dental Science at Melbourne University to become a country dentist in Daylesford. The desire to find a need to purchase a tractor for his 40 acre property, led to Graham s research into the suitability of the land for a vineyard. The history of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs as a wine growing area in the 1860 s by the Swiss Italian settlers encouraged Graham to undertake a viticulture course and subsequently winemaking courses at Dookie College. Prior to studying dentistry at University College Hospital, London, Graham had worked for three years in Flowers Brewery in England his life had turned full circle.
Cellar door was opened on Easter Saturday in 2000 with the release of Leura Glen Estate 1999 wines. Every year on Easter Saturday a festival is held to celebrate vintage.
The development of a brand identity has seen the succession from the Leura Glen label to Ellender Estate. The identity of Graham as the winemaker the distinctive e logo and the discovery by the graphic designer of Red Nelle saw the launch three years later on Easter Saturday of Ellender Estate. The production of sparkling wine, aptly named Ellender also prompted the name change.
The name change reflects the winery s growing reputation for distinctive and elegant boutique wines.
