"Kings of Kangaroo Ground" is a small, boutique wine producer on Melbourne's fringe only 40 minutes drive from central Melbourne. Travelling via Warrandyte we are easy to re encounter only one set of traffic lights from the start of the Eastern Freeway at Clifton Hill.
Wine making at Kings is based upon traditional techniques often overlooked or lost in the winemaking processes at larger wineries. We are a "village winery" upholding the traditions of artform winemaking
The "home block" vineyard was planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1990. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the vines are planted on a south slope in the rich black volcanic soils of Kangaroo Ground. Without irrigation, the south slope promotes long slow ripening of the grapes resulting in intense varietal characteristics in the finished wines.
Kings of Kangaroo Ground also manages the "Di Paolo block" vineyard on the flank of Kangaroo Ground's Garden Hill, an extinct volcano and source of the districts prized black soils. The "Di Paolo" cabernets crafted at Kings' have stunned the palates of wine lovers and judges alike. We are humbled by the power and structure of the wines off this block and believe we are nurturing an iconic wine of the future.
