HMAS Sydney Memorial Cairn
There is a range of items of memorablia relevant to the Sydney-Kormoran disaster kept in Carnarvon.
The battle between HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran took place off Carnarvon on the nineteenth of November 1941. Although controversy rages over the site that followed the battle there is no doubt about Carnarvon's role in the rescue operation that followed the battle. There were no survivors from the HMAS Sydney, but 319 men from aboard the Kormoran survived the ordeal. 216 of these men were taken to Carnarvon by rescue ships, and a further 103 came ashore on lifeboats just north of Carnarvon.
The HMAS Sydney Memorial Cairn is located 76 kilometres north of Carnarvon. The memorial stands high above the rugged coast at Quobba, where two lifeboats of Kormoran survivors came ashore.
The HMAS Sydney Memorail Wall in central Carnarvon lists the names of all those lost in the tragic battle.
The Kormoran Lifeboat is on display a the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct. Plans are in hand to restore this valuable relic.
