Big Lagoon
This is 15 kilometres by sea and accessible by road (four wheel drive only) through Peron Station Homestead area. It is asked of visitors to stop and inform the owners of your intentions and pay the fee.
The turn off to the station is a short distance along the Monkey Mia Road, to the left (opposite the golf club). The lagoon is a wonderful stretch sheltered water navigable by small craft. The waters abound with a variety of fish and oysters can be found on the western shore.
Here you will also find the claypans , known locally as birridas. They range in size from small depressions about 100 metres in diameter to irregular shaped depresions which may be several kilometres long.
As these structures consist of a thin surface crust over a bog mire caused by groundwaters, motorists are advised not to drive on birridas as they will risk becoming bogged.
