These shadows deliver a stark contrast bringing out the features of these huge limestone formations. Some of these limestone formations are three and a half metres tall. They rise from the shifting yellow sand stretching as far as the eye can see. The landscape resembles an eerie scene from a science fiction novel. For such an amazing sight it is hard to realize that this area was only publicly made known in 1960. Now it is visited by 150000 tourists each year. Early morning is also a good time to see the local fauna Western Grey Kangaroos and Emus.

Rottnest has an interesting history and there are many tours on the island, some free, highlighting both its past and spectacular beauty.
