Abandoned Mining Settlements

In the early 1900's prospectors moved into the area around sandstone and within a radius of fifty miles small towns became established. Some of these towns were Youanmi, Paynesville, Berrigrin, Barrambie and Montague.

Sandstone is surrounded by these now abandoned settlements and offers many an ardent fossicker or relic collector some fascinating finds.

Prospecting for alluvial gold is a popular pastime for visitors. Prospecting licences can be applied for at the Department of Industry and Resources.
