Youndegin

Visit the ruins of the early settlement of Youndegin, 19 kilometres south of Cunderdin, and see all that remains of a once thriving settlement.

You can walk through the old police outpost, which was built in 1865, and was the first building constructed, in what is said to be the earliest settlement in the area. The settlement grew to include the Youndegin Arms, as it established itself as an important stop off for the miners pouring through the area on their way to the goldfields.

When the railway was built, passing to the north of Youndegin, the settlement was virtually abandoned.

The police outpost was built out of stone and mud with a thatched roof. A nearby York gum tree was used as the lockup. Appreciate the early building techniques, as you wonder at the logistics of establishing a remote settlement so long ago.

Cunderdin is a two hour drive east of Perth.
