Niagara Dam
Niagara Dam was built in 1897 to provide plentiful fresh water for the locomotives that would soon be steaming along the new railway linking Kalgoorlie with Menzies.
The dam was built with cement hauled by camel train from Coolgardie, some 220 kilometres away. Unfortunately, Niagara Dam never accumulated enough water due to a lack of rainfall. To make matters worse a plentiful supply of underground water was located at nearby Kookynie.
Although not used for its original purpose, it does provide a beautiful picnic, swimming and camping spot for visitors and locals alike. An abundance of bird life can be seen by the dam waters.
