Koolama Wreck Site

The Koolama, a well-known state ship, was hit by Japanese bombs near Darwin in 1942. After limping all the way to Wyndham, it sank just 40 metres from the jetty.

Salvage of the vessel was unsuccessful as the wreck floated prematurely, tearing away air lines and cables. It sank in its present site, upside down. The only sign of its existence is the eerie swirling of the water.
