North West Shelf Natural Gas Project
A unique visit to the impressive North West Shelf Natural Gas Project provides an opportunity to witness Australian history in the making. Representing the largest oil and gas development in Australia, it accounts for more than 40 percent of the country’s oil and gas production. Take a walk through the visitors centre near the entrance to the gas plant, to gain an appreciation of its sheer size. Located on a rise, the centre provides spectacular panoramic views.
Spend time wandering around the centre viewing models of the platforms and interesting displays. Sit down to enjoy an award winning movie that conveys the story of the gas project and its development.
Whilst the general public are unable to visit the enormous gas plant on the Burrup Peninsula or the platforms off the coast, the centre provides an extremely insightful look at the gas project.
The North West Shelf Natural Gas Project is fifteen minutes drive from Karratha. The natural red rock along the drive is spectacular as is the prolific display of colour from wildflowers in season. Visitors can take a two hour flight from Perth to Karratha.
