Joonjoo Botanical Trail
You will enjoy this three kilometre easy walking trail wandering through a sample of the Wanganut Land System. This is an ancient dune and swale system that developed around two million years ago. The vegetation varies from species that favour the sandy dune crests to those that prefer the clay soils of the valleys between the dunes. The main features of the walk are the large termite mounds and the great variety of shapes and sizes of the boab trees along the trail.
The use of this habitat by the Nyikina Aboriginal people and the seasonal interactions between plants such as the boab tree, wattle, eucalypt and melaleuca species, with animals, insects, birds, and reptiles is described on plaques throughout the walk. A booklet containing a trail map and listing species of plants, animals, birds, reptiles and butterflies is available for a fee at the Derby Visitor Centre.
Look out for the agile wallaby, fairy wrens and skinks and marvel at the "boab crater".
