Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre
See the endangered Malleefowl in a natural setting and learn how the small rural town of Ongerup is fighting to save itself and its favourite bird.
The Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre is set to become Australia's premier mallee research and environment centre. Come and see the fascinating exhibition and enjoy a coffee and snack in our cafe. Find an unusual gift in our shop or go for a bushwalk; we have something to keep every member of the family entertained.
Visit the "Fowl Play" exhibition that tracks the story of the endangered malleefowl and its bushland habitat over some 40 million years - which is quite a story!
See how the early white settlers discovered the ancient mallee and tried to tame it and turn it into "new" farmland. The journey will introduce you to people who are endeavouring to change the tide of land degradation.
Immerse yourself in the bushland surrounding the Centre and take a short stroll to the large aviary housing a pair of malleefowl. Here you will see the birds doing what they do best - work on a nest mound (August to April).
The Centre is home to the Malleefowl Preservation Group (MPG) who facilitates research into the malleefowl and its habitat. A captive breeding program is planned for the future and you will be able to watch chicks hatching in an incubator.
Ongerup is situated in the heart of the Great Southern District and whether you're travelling to or from Perth to Albany, Hyden (Wave Rock) or Esperance it is an easy drive. Groups and caravans are welcome.
Opening 15 February 2007 see our website for details.
