Barkers and Gull Store
The existing small shop and warehouse are all that remain of a larger group of six buildings which once stood on the site. They were built by Samuel Barker, who acted as agent for shipments, of rural produce brought to Guildford for transport down the river to Fremantle. He also operated a general and liquor store, patronised largely by country visitors returning to the Eastern districts along the York and Toodyay roads.
In fact 1861 he went into partnership with Thomas Gull and the firm was renamed Barker and Gull. Their business was one of the most important of its kind in the colony in the period between 1850 and 1880.
Barker lived adjacent to the shop in a large two-storey house which was demolished in 1972.
