Bilgoman Well Heritage Trail
Located nine kilometres east of Midland along the Great Eastern Highway. The Bilgoman Well Heritage Trail is a 100 metre walking track through bushland to one of Chauncy's wells and the site of an old convict depot.
In 1846 the Western Australia Government resolved to accurately survey the colony's public roads. The road to York, pioneered by Ensign Robert Dale in 1831, and linking Perth with the Avon farming district, was the first to be surveyed. Phillip La Mothe Chauncy took 12 months to complete the survey of the roads.
In addition to marking out the line of the road, Chauncy constructed a number of wells and spent many hours recording the Aboriginal names of features and places along the roads.
It was a popular picnic spot up to the 1940s but was gradually forgotten amongst the regrowth of paperbarks, teatrees and bulrushes. The well was rediscovered in 1979 by members of the Darlington Ratepayers and Residents Association, who restored it as a community bicentennial project.
