Carlisle Castle Shipwreck
The 70 metre wreck of the Carlisle Castle lays on the Coventry Reef off the Rockingham coast, a one hour drive south of Perth. Local dive operators run tours to the popular dive site which sits in just 7.5 metres of water. Alternatively you could hire a boat to access the site which is 3.2 kilometres west of Penguin Island.
The wreck offers numerous ledges covered in heavy marine growth, and is home to a myriad of marine life. Swim amongst friendly colourful reef fish, Queen Snapper and Dhu Fish, with occasional visits from dolphins, Hammerhead sharks, Leafy Sea Dragons and seals.
The Carlisle Castle was carrying iron railway lines, water pipes and house bricks when it was swept off course in a treacherous storm in 1899. The wreckage is spread over 50 square metres. Plaques have been placed at the site describing of the vessel’s history and there is a monument to the crew at the Fremantle cemetery.
Water temperatures are moderate year round and the site usually offers good visibility. Conditions are usually best on summer mornings, before the afternoon sea breeze arrives or on calm clear winter days.
