Guildford Town Hall

A town trust was formed in Guildford as far back as 1840. Its early meetings were held in various Guildford inns and later in the Court House. When the convict Depot was closed in 1878, the old Snappers' and Miners' Quarters, which stood on the sute of the present Town Hall, were used as the offices of the Municipal Council. It was not until 1918 that offices were built especially for the council.

In 1938 a new Town Hall, designed by Summerhayes and Associates, was opened by the then Lt - Gov Sir James Mitchell. The block - like central tower is influenced by the Cubist style of modern architecture which had reached Australia from overseas in 1930's.

The Guildford Municipal Council amalgamated with the Swan Roads Board in 1960 and with the Midland Council in 1970 to form the Swan Shire Council. Since then the Guildford Town Hall has lost its former importance, but is still used as a theatre, and is a reminder of the history of local government in Guildford.
