The Old York Hospital
The Old York Hospital is an interesting two-storey heritage brick building, which was built in 1895. It is rumoured to be haunted, with varying reports of ghost sightings.
The hospital was designed by architect George Temple-Poole, and was built to accommodate the ever growing number of ill prospectors from the Goldfields.
It ceased to operate as a hospital in 1963. In 1976 the National Trust acquired the building and for the next 20 years it was used by the Youth Hostels Association. The complex was sold in 1998 to a private entity.
You can no longer tour the inside of the old building, but it is worth stopping by on a walking tour of York to look at from the outside. The hospital has a fine shingle roof and an interesting street presence.
York is a one hour drive east of Perth. With a rich history and range of interesting historic buildings, it is well worth a visit.
