Western Australian Museum - Fremantle History
The Western Australian Museum - Fremantle History tells the story of Fremantle and its people from its birth as a cluster of tents on a beach at the mouth of the Swan River in 1829 to the vibrant port city it is today.
The Museum building, which it shares with the Fremantle Arts Centre, was built in the 1860s and originally served as the colony’s first asylum before being used as a woman’s home, midwifery training school and American supply base during World War II.
The Museum includes fascinating artefacts from the times of settlement, through the War periods to the waves of migrants who entered Australia through Fremantle Port from the 1950s to today.
