Canning River
With picturesque walk trails and excellent conditions for water skiing, boating, cruising, rowing, canoeing and fishing, the Canning River attracts hordes of locals most weekends.
The Canning River is the main tributary of the Swan River.
It flows from the Darling Range and enters the Swan at Melville Water between the suburbs of South Perth and Applecross.
Here, you’ll find scenic walking and cycle paths, which are popular among locals.
It’s also a great place for water skiing especially when the river is at its glassy best.
Within the Darling Range there are five dams along the Canning River, which provide drinking water for the State.
Canning Dam is one of Perth’s most important reservoirs and makes a great day trip from the city.
You’ll find plenty of picnic spots with free barbecues and toilet facilities.
Walking trails take you past historic features and are well signposted.
There’s also plenty of native wildlife to see including kangaroos and birds.
Canning Dam is located southwest of Roleystone, about a 45 minute drive from Perth.
The Canning River is best accessed from Melville Water which is a 10 minute drive from Perth.
