Cockburn Sound
Cockburn Sound is a 100 square kilometre marine embayment located south of Perth. It is surrounded by Garden Island on the west, Cape Peron and Rockingham on the south, with the coastal strip on the east.
It's protected waters and beaches are of unique value to the people of Perth for recreational, fishing, aquaculture, industry and as a port. The marine ecosystem is very important and the seagrasses here are very rare, found mainly in Western Australia only. They are a vital link in the marine food chain. A causeway links the mainland with Garden Island where a large Naval base has been established.
Fishing, boating, yachting, swimming and diving are the most popular recreational activities.
