Garden Island
Just offshore from Rockingham is Garden Island, famous for its beautiful beaches and bays which are ideal for picnics, swimming, fishing, surfing and sailing.
The island is also home to an Australian Naval Base, HMAS Stirling which operates as a submarine service and training centre.
Most of the island is open to the public and you can access it by private boat. Cruise to Garden Island and then moor in one of the protected bays for a pleasant afternoon of swimming, fishing and relaxing. Go ashore and keep watch for the native Tammar, a small species of wallaby that lives there.
You can also see remnants of the first settlement set up by Captain James Stirling in the late 1800s at Cliff Head. The original well is there, and a memorial and lookout has also been constructed.
A four kilometre long causeway links Garden Island with the mainland but access is by boat only.
Rockingham is about an hour's drive south of Perth.
