West Coast Dive Park
The waters off Rockingham, less than an hour from Perth, are home to a myriad of marine life and submerged reefs, plus a number of picturesque historic shipwrecks. The West Coast Dive Park has been established here to create an array of SCUBA diving experiences at this great location.
The West Coast Dive Park is located within the boundaries of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. This 279 square kilometre area of coastal waters off Rockingham stretches from Casuarina Shoal to the James Service Reef and includes the five-fathom bank and western portion of Warnbro Sound. It is a rich and diverse marine environment.
The submarine environment is characterised by a sandy-bottom and seagrass areas, underwater ledges and overhangs, lumps, cavernous and low broken reefs, with fringing reefs that offer added protection.
The reef and wreck areas support a variety of temperate and subtropical invertebrates including sea stars, urchins and molluscs as well as a number of fish species. Bottlenose dolphins are extremely common in the Dive Park's waters.
At present a total of 10 wrecks are located on the ocean floor within this area. Popular wreck dive sites within the Park include the Carlisle Castle and the SS Orizaba. It is proposed that further wrecks will be sunk to expand the diving attractions over the next 10 years.
There is good diving throughout the year, depending on daily weather. In summer, morning dives are best, before the afternoon sea breeze arrives, while calm winter days can offer enjoyable diving conditions. Water temperatures are moderate year round. The water clarity is high, and the area is outside major boating and shipping channels.
The Park includes locations with depths up to 25 metres. Dive sites require boat access. There are a number of local dive companies who run regular tours in the Dive Park.
