Avon Ascent
The Avon Ascent offers a self drive tour through Perth scenic hinterland to a series of special places in the Avon Valley. It is directly aimed at demonstrating the importance of landcare to city dwellers.
The drive from Perth to the historic town of York and historical Balladong Farm takes about 1.5 hours.
The next site is Gwambygine Park just 10 kilometres south on the Great Southern Highway. This section is set on one of the permanent pools of the Avon River. The park offers full picnic facilities, an adventure playground and wildlife viewing opportunities. A boardwalk takes the visitor out over the flood plain to a viewing tower. Information about the river, its history and management is displayed throughout the park.
The third stop is the Avondale Discovery Farm, 23 kilometres further up river near Beverley. This is a working farm and a Western Australian Department of Agriculture Research Station which is open to the public seven days a week. Avondale includes a Landcare Resource Centre, a farm drive and a farm history display. The indoor resource centre display of the Avon River Catchment, allows visitors to see under the soil, touch real crops, and have current landcare projects explained. The farm drive is lined with information boards and includes a gazebo, which provides a view of prime farmland and explanations of problems and projects. The history display includes the country home of Western Australia's first Governor, old farm machines, a feed silo, stables and Clydesdale horses.
