A perfect base
The rugged coastline a short drive north of Carnarvon features outstanding coastal cliffs at Cape Cuvier, plus great fishing, swimming and snorkelling year round. Pack a hamper and visit Rocky Pool and Chinamans Pool, nestled among ghost gums.
Amazing Mount Augustus
Located 450 kilometres east of Carnarvon, Mount Augustus is the largest monolith in the world. It is twice the size of Uluru (Ayers Rock) standing 858 metres above the surrounding plain. The main difference between it and Uluru is that Mount Augustus is encircled by a slope of loose rocks and so lacks the distinctive shape of Uluru. During June to August, it is surrounded by wildflowers. It is estimated that the rock core of the mountain is some 1000 million years old.
Carnarvon's oasis
Carnarvon's palm-lined streets, tropical plantations and the beautiful Fascine Inlet offer an oasis to travellers in the Gascoyne. With tropical fruit and freshly caught seafood aplenty, it's hard to leave!
Fruits and the sea
Carnarvon is a town of palm-lined streets, tropical plantations, and picturesque waters. Bananas, mangoes, papaya, melons and grapes are all grown here, while fresh fish, prawns and scallops are caught locally and sold as cheap as chips.
